Hotels starry-eyed over sky-high experiences

Stargazing is a hobby that is trending worldwide. On May 23, 2018, Australia’s ABC television organized a Stargazing Live event that resulted in over 285 simultaneous stargazing parties around Australia. The broadcasting corporation was able to confirm that over 40,000 simultaneously observed the moon for the set 10 minutes. This gave ABC Stargazing Live the Guinness World Record for an event that saw thousands of telescopes pointed at once at the night sky.

Hotels and resorts are getting in on the act. On the Mediterranean island of Mallorca, Jumeirah Port Soller Hotel & Spa is running a Romantic Stargazing Experience, which includes a two-hour private stargazing masterclass led by a local expert from Mallorca’s observatory. The 120-room hotel, itself perched at the top of a low peaked area, looks to Tramuntana mountains one side, down to the Mediterranean the other. The “experience” comes with a five-course meal for two, at Tramuntana Terrace, with tremendous views.

“Knowing you are looking up at the heavens to the sound of breaking waves brings a special energy and vibe to this stargazing experience,” says the hotel’s GM, Jordi Tarrida, who acutely understands the value of promotions that get publicity (throughout this year’s summer season he has run, poolside, a pop-up Taylor Morris eyewear service, which includes making personalized glasses).
