Briefs: SBE makes big move into Mexico

Mondrian and more for Mexico. Lifestyle operator SBE has announced a partnership with Be Grand and its CEO Nicolas Carrancedo to develop 144 hotel rooms and 126 branded residences and create the Mondrian Polanco Hotel & Residences in Mexico City. This property will also be the first of 10 SBE-branded properties that partnership will bring to Mexico City and its metropolitan area in the next five years. The second project to be announced will be Mondrian Del Valle, which will debut in 2022 and include 248 branded residences. In addition to the Mondrian properties, the upcoming projects will include SBE’s SLS and Hyde brands. Within these projects, SBE will also bring over 25 restaurant and lounge concepts to the market.

China JV delivers. Thomas Cook China, the joint venture between Thomas Cook Group and Fosun, has announced two projects in China, including the first Asian Casa Cook, Thomas Cook’s boutique hotel brand. The JV will develop a Casa Cook and a Thomas Cook Sunwing Family Resort in Fosun’s developments in Lijiang in southwestern China, and Taicang near Shanghai, respectively. The hotels will be built by Fosun and managed by Thomas Cook China. The two properties follow previously announced projects with DreamEast Group, a resort development company listed in Hong Kong, for two Thomas Cook Sunwing Family Resorts, one, in Jiashan near Shanghai and the other Hengyang, in southern China.

Ascott passes 100k mark. CapitaLand’s wholly owned lodging business unit, The Ascott Ltd., has secured contracts for another 26 properties with over 4,600 units across 18 cities and 11 countries. The new additions boost its portfolio to over 100,000 units. Ascott has entered the Netherlands market with the signing of Citadines Sloterdijk Station Amsterdam, a franchised property in Amsterdam. It has also expanded its presence in China, India, Indonesia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Turkey, Vietnam, United Arab Emirates and the United Kingdom. Ascott’s global footprint now extends to 172 cities across 33 countries. Ascott’s goal is to reach 160,000 units worldwide by 2023.

Accor grows in UK. AccorHotels has signed two Mercure hotels in Yorkshire, including the 59-room Mercure Leeds Centre, which is already open, and the 98-room Mercure Tankersley Manor, set to open in 2020.

Dalata deal. Dalata Hotel Group, Dublin, has entered into arrangements to lease a new hotel as part of the Spencer Place project in Dublin’s docklands. The new hotel targeted to open in Q4 2020 is being developed by a joint venture of Ronan Group Real Estate and Colony Capital. The 4-star, 200-room property will operate within the Dalata portfolio but with bespoke branding consistent with the broader Spencer Place development.

US$30B of MEA deals on books. The Arabian Hotel Investment Conference 2019 (April 9-11 in Ras Al Khaimah) has released the second annual AHIC Hotel Investment Forecast, which reveals that close to US$30 billion worth of hotel construction contracts will be awarded in the Middle East and North Africa between now and 2023. The UAE again leads the way with almost US$11 billion worth of planned and un-awarded hotel projects, including The Address Harbour Point, MGM Resorts and Warner Brothers hotels in Dubai. Egypt is the second largest future market with just over US$4 billion worth of hotel projects. It is followed closely by Saudi Arabia at US$3.9 billion.
