The Otahuna Lodge, a recently renovated seven-suite getaway just outside Christchurch, New Zealand, has designed a special two-night culinary package for mushroom lovers.
Offered from February through April, “The Great Mushroom Hunt” package includes a foraging excursion with Executive Chef Jimmy McIntyre, a five-course degustation dinner featuring the finds from foraging, a food and wine tour of Canterbury led by a local award-winning food writer, and a cooking lesson from Chef McIntyre focusing on mushroom recipes, preparation methods and cooking techniques. A second five-course dinner with wine pairings selected to enhance certain types of mushrooms also is included, as is breakfast each day.

Says Chef McIntyre, “While both dinners will celebrate the versatility and adaptability that mushrooms bring to cooking and menus—whether as the focal part of a dish or as an enhancement to another ingredient—each dinner will have its own distinctive appeal. On one night we might revisit classic dishes while on the other a more contemporary spin may be given.”
“Otahuna’s mushrooms are indigenous to this part of the country. It’s fantastic to have such an abundant supply on our doorstep and to have the freedom to decide the evening’s menu just a few hours ahead of dinner.”
Depending on suite type and month of stay, the package ranges from US$2,110 to US$3,320 plus tax.
