The Keating Hotel Has Designs On Franchise Opportunities

LAS VEGAS, May 15 Edward Kaen, founder and CEO of The Keating Hotel Group, has announced that he is looking for hoteliers interested in franchising The Keating by Pininfarina brand for their own hotels.
“There are lots of people who own small hotels that are ready for refurbishing, but need a theme,” he said at the HD Expo in Las Vegas, Nevada. “If these folks become part of The Keating Hotel Group, they can brand themselves with the Keating name and get instant recognition.”
The first Keating Hotel opened in downtown San Diego’s Gaslamp District in April, 2007, and has quickly earned an international reputation for “high service and high design.”
Key to The Keating’s reputation is the exclusive partnership with the Italian-based design house Pininfarina, which is best known for its work on Ferraris and Mazeratis.
Pininfarinia has an exclusive contract to design Keating Hotels and Kaen says that future hotels in the chain will follow the San Diego flagship’s high standards, while having a look suitable for the unique qualities of each location.
“The Keating theme is mixing the new with the old, and Pininfarinia design emphasizes ergonomics and functionality,” Kaen said. “Each new hotel will designed for its city. For instance, the floors at the San Diego Keating are ‘Battleship Grey’ to reflect the city’s military history.”
That means a hotel at a beach resort or one at an urban area will be designed to fit the location and enhance it. But no matter how different each Keating looks from another, Kaen says all will offer “high design with high service.”
Options for each hotel include a restaurant, a nightclub or a pizzeria and even a racetrack.
“Since Pininfarina is known for their work on Ferraris and Mazeratis, it would be nice to put a hotel next to a racetrack so that people who own those cars could drive them around the track,” Kaen said.
In addition, Kaen believes “boutique” is best. “We are interested in working with hotels that have between 35 to 120 rooms. That’s the sweet spot for us,” Kaen said.
The Keating Hotel Group is currently reviewing applications from hotels in various U.S. cities but is also interested in expanding the brand to Asia, Europe and Latin America, places where Pininfarina design is celebrated.
