-- Hotels, 10/31/2009 11:00:00 PM
For the 28th year, HOTELS magazine presents its Hotelier of the World award winners, as chosen by readers around the world. This year, HOTELS reaches across the pond for both its corporate and independent winners: Sir Rocco Forte of The Rocco Forte Collection, London, and Hans Wiedemann of Badrutt's Palace, St. Moritz, Switzerland.
Forte is the second member of his famed family to accept the corporate award, as his father, Lord Forte, won the second-ever award in 1982. Forte has toiled in the business since age 15, when his father put him to work as a waiter in one of his hotels. Now, almost 50 years later, he has created his own growing empire of luxury hotels across Europe, gaining the admiration of hoteliers worldwide for combining cutting-edge style with the highest levels of service.
Wiedemann wins the independent hotelier award in his sixth year managing Badrutt's Palace, following an eight-year stint heading up another of Switzerland's grande dame hotels, Le Montreux Palace. Due in large part to his passion for independent hotelkeeping and his belief in the importance of preserving the identities of the world's great hotels, the Badrutt family has bequeathed to Wiedemann a controlling interest in the legendary property.
