NYC's Hotel Marcel Gets Tatooist-In-Residence
Mister Cartoon to become the world’s first-ever “Tattoo Artist in Residence” at Hotel Marcel

Hotel Marcel, a boutique hotel near New York City’s Gramercy Park and Murray Hill neighborhoods, today announces an ongoing art series, M.O.A.R. – Marcel Original Art on Rotation. M.O.A.R. will bring progressive, burgeoning artists into the spotlight at Hotel Marcel on a recurring basis throughout the year. The first artist in the series, Los Angeles based artist Mister Cartoon, will debut the premier art installation in February 2010. Mister Cartoon will also act as Hotel Marcel’s “Tattoo Artist in Residence”, offering an exclusive experience to guests of the hotel.
Hotel Marcel reopened in October 2008 with an extensive redesign, bringing a mercurial and artistic personality to the hotel. To complement this new look and attitude, Hotel Marcel created M.O.A.R. – Marcel Original Art on Rotation, to help foster, embrace and highlight emerging and alternative artists. Hotel Marcel will partner with exceptional artists on three month rotations to bring site-specific artwork to the 40 by 20-foot exterior wall of the hotel, as well as unique exclusive experiences to hotel guests. M.O.A.R artists will create their work according to a theme, which will change annually. The theme for M.O.A.R’s 2010 debut is “Concrete Jungle”: encouraging artists to explore the juxtaposed elements of fast-paced city life. Each artist’s experience can be followed through the M.O.A.R microblog via the Hotel Marcel website at hotelmarcel.com/MOAR. (launching November 16th), as each artist chronicles their time at the hotel and their creative process in producing their M.O.A.R contribution.
“As a company that prides itself on identifying and cultivating emerging talent, it was a natural progression for Hotel Marcel to develop the Marcel Original Art on Rotation series,” says David Bowd, President - Amsterdam Hospitality. “We are very excited to have Mister Cartoon in-house to kick off this very special initiative by being our Tattoo Artist in Residence.”
During Mister Cartoon’s time on property, not only will he create the first piece of M.O.A.R art, he will act as Hotel Marcel’s “Tattoo Artist in Residence.” Famous for tattooing celebrities such as Beyonce, Christina Aguilera, Eminem, Mena Suvari and Ryan Phillippe – Mister Cartoon will set up his very own Ink Suite at Hotel Marcel, where he will see his regular clientele as well as hotel guests while working on his masterpiece for the outside wall. Guests of the hotel will have the unique privilege of skipping the one-year waiting list to get “inked” by Mister Cartoon. His residency will run in two parts: his first stay will take place from November 15th – 24th 2009, with a two-week return visit at the beginning of February 2010, culminating with the unveiling of his exterior M.O.A.R installation.
“It is very exciting to see an establishment like Hotel Marcel take a deep interest in artists and provide them with a creative space where they can express themselves,” said Mister Cartoon. “I have been coming in and out of NYC since the late eighties, the creative energy that New York possesses is a pure rush and I look forward to channeling that into my work with Hotel Marcel’s M.O.A.R series.”
