AMResorts today sent an email to consumers requesting that they bring medical supplies with them on their visits to AMResorts properties in the Domincan Republic.
The email reads, in part: "For those traveling to our Dominican Republic resorts in the near future, you can help contribute by bringing medical supplies with you, which willthen be delivered to local relief centers and given directly to those in need."
AMResorts suggests the following supplies: ganmaglobulina human tetanus, analgesics (acetaminophen, ibuprofen), antibiotics (amoxicifilina, in suspension and/or tablets), antiseptics (Betadine type or chlorhexidine soap type), sanitary napkins, oral rehydration, gauze, cotton, slings, elastic bandages and tetanus toxoid.
The Dominican Republic and Haiti share the island of Hispaniola. Despite the devastation in Haiti, the Dominican sustained minimal damage from last week's earthquake.
Dominican tourism officials and hoteliers are struggling with how to best address the disaster publicly. They are emphasizing that the country is open for visitors, but given the depth of the tragedy on the other side of the island, some tourists might feel guilty or uncomfortable about holidaying there at present.
The challenge is perhaps best illustrated by the scrutiny Royal Caribbean International is facing over its decision to make a port call on Friday in Haiti, with some guests calling it "disgusting" to be holidaying so close to the disaster zone.
