Kahla Recipient of Two International Awards
By Staff -- HOTELS Magazine, 8/1/2000
KAHLA, GERMANY In 1998 and 1999, Kahla/Thüringen Porzellan GmbH received six awards for its porcelain concept “update” by Barbara Schmidt. Four of the awards were national and two were international. The two international “Good Design Awards” were given by the Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design, USA, and by Japan Industrial Design Promotion Organization (JIDPO), Tokyo.
The Good Design Competition and Exhibition was organized in Chicago in 1950 by Edgar J. Kaufmann, Jr. Kahla’s “update” was exhibited at the museum between November 4, 1999, and March 31, 2000, and will be placed in the museum’s permanent design collection. The Ministry of International Trade and Industry in Japan first instituted the award in 1957 as the Good Design Selection System, and in 1998 it was reborn as the Good Design Award sponsored by JIDPO. Judges from JIDPO commented that “the tableware set ‘update’ is captivating through its purism and honesty. It is a set that one would like to use for any occasion.”
