Mandarin Plans Hotel For Tokyo

TOKYO Mandarin Oriental International Limited, Hong Kong, announces

it will manage a new luxury hotel in Tokyo, the 171-room Mandarin Oriental

Tokyo. Mandarin will enter into a long-term lease agreement with owner

and developer of the hotel, Mitsui Fudosan Co., Limited.

The hotel will be part of a mixed-use development that will also include

high-end office and retail components. The Mandarin Oriental Tokyo will

occupy the top 10 floors of the new 41-story Muromachi Mitsui Shinkan

building, which is being incorporated into the 72-year old historic

Mitsui Main Building. Internationally renowned architect Cesar Pelli

is designing the new building complex.

When the hotel opens in 2006, it will offer panoramic views of the

Imperial Palace and its gardens from the guestrooms, suites and sky

lobby. In addition, the lobby and reception, located on level 30, will

feature sweeping city views of the Central business district. The Mandarin

Oriental Tokyo also will feature an exclusive spa and health club; extensive

restaurants and bars; boutique cellars; cake shop; and significant business,

meeting and banquet facilities.

A 60-Story Ritz-Carlton Hotel/Residences To Open In Toronto

TORONTO, BRITISH COLUMBIA, CANADA Toronto-based Bowmore Group of Companies

and Atlanta-based The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company, L.L.C. unveil plans

to develop a US$300 million, 60-story hotel/residential building in

the heart of downtown Toronto.

The first seven floors of the Ritz-Carlton, Toronto will feature the

lobby, ballroom, meeting space and gourmet restaurants. The 228 guestrooms

and suites will occupy the eighth through 20th floors. On floors 36

and 37, a dual-level luxury spa and fitness center will offer guests

the ultimate in pampering and wellness facilities. Floors 30 through

57 will house the residences and penthouse suites, with high ceilings

and spectacular city views.

Scheduled to open in 2003, the distinctively designed skyscraper will

include a 100-ft (30 m) titanium dome and spire, and will be Canada's

tallest residential building. The interior of the 5-star hotel will

reflect both contemporary and classic elements, from the carpets and

wall coverings to the furnishing and in-room amenities. Internationally

renowned Zeidler Roberts Partnership/Architects, Toronto, has been retained

as the project's design architects, joining the project's architect

of record, Toronto-based Kirkor Architects.

Hyatt To Open 26th Hotel in California: Hyatt Regency Grand Coast Resort

HUNTINGTON BEACH, CALIFORNIA Hyatt Hotels Corporation, Chicago, and

the Robert Mayer Corporation have secured funding in a joint venture

to build a privately financed waterfront Hyatt resort, scheduled to

open in late 2002. The 519-room Hyatt Regency Grand Coast Resort will

sit on an elevated parcel of land that ensures each guestroom will have

a view of the Pacific Ocean. Guestroom design features a relaxed Andalusian

theme, with a large percentage of rooms configured as luxury suites.

The hotel will offer guests two restaurants, a retail shopping plaza

and 52,000 sq.ft. (4,830 sq.m) of indoor meeting space. There also will

be significant outdoor function space including an expansive ocean-view

lawn intended for outdoor weddings, parties and receptions. The resort

will include a signature Hyatt pool and recreation area, also overlooking

the ocean. Additionally, guests will have direct beach access provided

by a pedestrian bridge adjacent to the hotel.

Adding to the exquisite Spa Hyatt collection, the resort will offer

a 20,000-sq.ft. (1,858-sq.m) Pacific Waters Spa that will provide treatments

and preparations indigenous to Pacific Island cultures. Currently, there

are 19 Spa Hyatt destinations.

Outrigger Plans US$300 Million Retail Entertainment, Hotel Project

HONOLULU, HAWAII Outrigger Enterprises announces a US$300 million,

multi-year redevelopment project, named Waikiki Beach Walk. Outrigger

plans to redevelop its 7.9 acres (19 ha) of properties in the Lewers-Kalia

area in Waikiki into an exciting new retail, entertainment and hotel

project. The project involves the incremental phase-out of several of

the company's older hotels and the simultaneous redevelopment of the

area into a new hotel-retail, mixed-use development.

Phase One is scheduled to begin in 2003 with the construction of a

new, two-level retail entertainment complex in the place of three older

hotels: the Edgewater Lanais, the Ohana Coral Seas, and the Ohana Edgewater.

The Ohana Waikiki Village and the Ohana Waikiki Tower will be reconstructed

and linked by a new four-level podium featuring a grand lobby serving

both hotels, meeting and banquet space, and a rooftop pool deck.

Phase Two, scheduled to begin in 2006, includes replacing the Ohana

Reef Lanai, the Ohana Royal Island and the Malihini Hotel with a new

890-room hotel. Pedestrian bridges will connect the new hotel to the

Phase One entertainment, retail and meeting complex.

Fairmont To Manage Hotel In Dubai

DUBAI Fairmont Hotels & Resorts, Toronto,

Ontario, Canada, will manage the 393-room The Fairmont Dubai, according

to the office of His Highness Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Khalifa Al Nahyan.

It was also stated that Fairmont is to acquire a minority stake in

the project.

"We see this project as the first step in a strategic alliance

between the private office of His Highness Dr. Sheikh Sultan and Fairmont

to build and operate a number of luxury hotels in the region and other

international markets," says William Fatt, chairman and CEO of

Fairmont Hotels & Resorts. When concluded, the joint venture will

be the first investment in the hospitality sector in

Dubai, if not the United Arab Emirates, by an international hotel operator.

Designed in the form of an Arabic wind tower (Barajeel), consisting

of four interlocking towers, it will offer state-of-the-art business

facilities, residential apartments, three floors of office space, a

world class spa and health club and 12 food and beverage outlets.

ORTRABANDA, WILLEMSTAD, CURAÇAO, The Kurá Hulanda Properties,

Curaçao, Netherlands Antilles, is planning to open the Lodge

Kurá Hulanda by late 2002. The 120 suites consisting of 76 safari

house suites (built with palm-thatched roofs and clay

walls) and 44 one-bedroom suites are being built on the Kadusi Cliffs.

All suites feature hand-carved furniture from Africa along with individual

art pieces, private balcony or terrace, cable TV, telephone with modem

and voice mail, in-room safe and marbled bathrooms. The interior designer/architect

is Leo Helms from Amsterdam. The owner and manager of

the property is Jacob Gelt Dekker.

The all-inclusive luxury resort will offer on-site facilities that

include horseback riding, a dive center, tennis, slot

machines, bicycles, fitness center and two swimming pools

designed to resemble lush tropical lagoons with extensive foliage.
