There are three words/phrases that pop up in many hotel press releases or hotel executives’ reviews again and again: passion, dedication, attention to detail. Indeed, these words are synonymous with the very fiber of our profession, although, as we all know, one has to learn many other disciplines to be successful in our business.
Two men come to my mind who epitomize the bastion of these virtues, and, at the same time, represent the best of our industry: Dr. Natale Rusconi of Cipriani fame in Venice and Kurt Wachtveitl of The Oriental in Bangkok. I have known both since my younger years in this business, and every time I visit their hotels, I just marvel at the essence of our profession so well executed by these gentlemen. What is their secret to staying on top of the leaderboard for over 30 years? One hotel, same love, total devotion and good eyes.
If you want to be in the hospitality business—be hospitable! Remember the basics and respect the cornerstones of our business: sincere service and loyalty. Both attributes do not come overnight. You have to earn them. So, what makes a great hotelier and a great hotel? See above!
With all the ongoing turmoil, excitement and financial hoopla in the hotel industry, it is good to reflect occasionally on the importance of the basics without glorification. What is it that makes the difference? Where do the Wall Street gurus really want to invest their money and last in this business? Bricks or brains? Hopefully both!
My salute goes to the people of HOTELS, the magazine of the hotel world, celebrating its 40th anniversary, for their loyalty and support to our industry.
