Ice Ice Baby
Trendy Parisians (and those pretending to be) have a unique, new way to enjoy a cocktail and the winter weather: the ice bar in the courtyard of the Four Seasons Hotel George V. Within this 602-sq. ft. (56-sq. m) boudoir-style space, which is kept at a cool 46°F (8°C), everything is sculpted from ice, including the armchairs, the sofa, the bar and the artwork. Chilly, yes, but there is warmth to be found. Whether it is shots of top-shelf Russian vodka or custom-designed fur ponchos available to guests, a cozy atmosphere provides some extra protection from the cold. The ice bar debuted in November and will be open through January.
Landmark Return
Nine months after shutting its doors for an extensive, US$140 million renovation, the iconic Mandarin Oriental, Hong Kong, has reopened to high praise. Since its 1963 debut the hotel has been positioned as one of the legendary hotels not only in Asia but across the globe. The renovations touched nearly every square foot of the 502-room hotel, including nine restaurants and bars, a Shanghainese-inspired holistic spa, extensive fitness center and large banquet facilities. Sixty-eight suites, including this Oriental Suite shown here, feature glass-enclosed balconies and palatial bathrooms with window views. As with all Mandarin Oriental hotels, the focus was on creating a luxury retreat with a contemporary aesthetic.
