The Power Of Status Updates
Nevermind the fact that thanks to professional networking I have some 250 connections (many of whom are hoteliers or in hospitality-related positions) linking me to nearly 2.2 million other professionals on LinkedIn. Nevermind that I'm a member of a half-dozen hospitality related groups on the same site.
Let's talk about the power of a small thing known as the "status update," which I believe LinkedIn borrowed from the younger audience-leaning social networking sites Facebook and Twitter.
Yesterday morning I changed my "status" on LinkedIn to note that I am looking to talk with hotel executives about Latin America, as I'm currently doing research and reporting prior to an in-depth article I will write about the region in our September issue.
By this morning, I had three e-mail messages in my inbox from various LinkedIn users suggesting highly relevant potential interview sources on Latin America and offering to put me in touch with these sources.
This is a journalist's dream, of course! But such a response applies not only to journalism, but also to nearly all other professions--
Need help with something? Why not reach out to your trusted networks--whether in your office, outside it, or online? Who better to help you find some information or solve a problem than the people you know in related roles? And what easier way to do so than simply typing a few words to let others know how to help you?
