Starwood CEO On-The-Go-Go
Freshly back to my hotel room after a 5.1 mile run through New York's Central Park with Starwood CEO Frits van Paasschen, here are my first thoughts:
1) He really kicked my butt
2) My feet and legs are already sore
3) I think it's time for new running shoes
4) He really kicked my butt
5) I'll keep up with him next time
Hopefully there is a next time... This was the second "Run For Fun With Frits," the first taking place at the Americas Lodging Investment Conference (ALIS) back in January in Los Angeles (today's kicked off the NYU Hospitality Investment Conference). Both were sponsored by Starwood's fledgling ELEMENT hotels brand, and both included eco-friendly transportation, but that's where the similarities stop.
This run was longer (last time was only 3.5 miles), hotter (last time was 7 a.m. January, this one was 5 p.m. in June) and much more crowded (Central Park was bustling on this summer Sunday, especially compared with the UCLA campus at 7 a.m.). Thankfully, the ELEMENT support team was out in full force, handing out small bottles of water at various points throughout our course and cheering us on.
Unfortunately, I didn't have much more luck than during the first run as far as conducting any sort of an interview with Frits (it's hard to talk business when you're just trying to keep up), but I did learn that another journalist from USA Today is currently working on a profile of him, due out shortly. In the meantime, all I have to offer is one more photo (see others here).
That said, I'm sure I'll have a much better update on what's new with Starwood and its brands after the Aloft A-Go-Go party tomorrow night and the press luncheon with the company's global development executives on Tuesday. Stay tuned.
