Hilton's 'Worst-Kept Secret' To Be Unveiled At ALIS
November 21, 2008
Hilton Hotels Corp. has announced a press conference for January, during the Americas Lodging Investment Summit, to unveil the company's "new development concept."The press invite reads in part: "One of HHC's core objectives is global growth; the news shared at this ALIS press event will outline impetus for growth and an exciting new product concept designed to meet the needs of an underrepresented segment of the market."
Brad Carmony, director of brand communications for Homewood Suites by Hilton, admitted to me this morning that the forthcoming announcement may be "the worst-kept secret in the industry."
Since Chris Nassetta came on board as president and CEO of Hilton a year ago, the company has been talking openly about its plans to enter the upscale lifestyle segment and to expand its luxury portfolio. Hilton made a high-profile move this summer toward those ends, plucking Ross Klein from Starwood. Klein, of course, was integral in guiding W Hotels to the top of the branded lifestyle category.
So let's hear some informed speculation from all you industry insiders: What exactly will Hilton be announcing on January 26?

Hilton is a brand that is world known. But, till now has not found a way to really develop the name with the business. Barry picked Klein for that reason at Starwood. He can do same for Hilton. Very good fellow.

I suspect a luxury mixed-use lifestyle community geared towards retirees who desire a sense of independence but with a built-in place of community. Something that gets away from the gated&segregated feeling of current retirement home offerings. (I'm totally guessing - but I'm just saying...) Seriously though, who is going to finance any serious new development in this current economic depression?

Let's hope they can continue to build the name and brand they already have - once one of the best in the industry. As relatively new owners, they are still to maximize the power of what they bought. Aping all the rest with their newest 'Also-rans' in "our lifestyle too", or "our new letter brand too", will be distracting - rebuilding the strength that is the inherent potential in the Hilton name they have already got would be the real Surprise - and their best approach in these times. Anything else just further dilutes their returns to stakeholders- and avoids treating the malaise in existing product and management standards in the main brands.

Maybe that they are finally going to strategically place the Conrad brand somewhere in their portfolio and develop it wisely. On top of that Blackstone will probably sell the embassy brand. Lastly they will announce a offical "grand plan" for the international division and not just some things left right and center every other week

It would most likely be the establishment of yet another brand confusing the landscape even more for guests. As mentioned in earlier posts Conrad and Waldorf-Astoria are existing under utilized brands in Hilton's cache. Take one of those two brands, add fresh marketing minds and a semi-independent thought-operation-power structure and they just might have something. Another "new brand" trying to make its mark is not what our industry needs at this juncture.

Too little, too late. This is the worst time to roll this out, their obvious competitor TownePlace has always struggled, ESA is almost bankrupt, the extended stay business lost it's luster years ago, and banks are lot loaning for hotels.. WOW

As nearly a life-long Hilton employee, first-time caller, 15 years a corporate-managed or owned, 5 franchise, who once met Barron Hilton at the Waldorf , I believe a Hilton will once again take over the leadership. Atta Girl Paris!
