Twittering The Days Away
September 10, 2008

I'm generally high on social media as a marketing tool for hotels, but one popular platform that I've been awfully skeptical about is Twitter, which is essentially a hybrid between a RSS feed and Facebook status updates. It kind of struck me as a form of lazy, content-free blogging.

I finally decided to give Twitter a real chance this week, and I'm starting to think I was off the mark on my previous judgment. You can follow my Twittering at twitter.com/askirby, if you're so inclined.

Like the world of blogs, Twitter definitely has its fair share of useless dreck. But it also has nuggets of info and plenty of mildly amusing tidbits.

Among the stuff I learned from my 5-minute morning Twitter perusal (which will become a part of my daily Web-surfing routine, right after reading email and right before checking the WIWIH blogroll) ...

  • Luxor Las Vegas has placed Wii consoles in some rooms, charging a US$20 premium, and is considering adding them to cabanas and lounges...
  • From Marriott International's green Twitter account, we learn the company is planning to replace 24 million key cards in the United States, with the new key cards to be made of 100% recycled plastic...
  • MGM Grand Las Vegas is interacting with other Twitterers, discussing the best ways to leverage the system. Which brings up the obvious question: Special rate offers and promotions are the most obvious way for hotels to leverage Twitter, but are there any other ideas out there?
