Where Were You At 8:45 a.m. On 9/11/01?
September 11, 2008
Today is a sad day for many people. Early this morning, my son and I were walking our dogs and I mentioned the significance of today and wanted to prepare him for any conversations about it in school.
I distinctly remember where I was when the attacks happened. Max was only 3 years old, and my daughter was not yet born. At the time I was working from home for a convention and visitor's bureau. I was beginning my day of solicitation when my wife came in and said that a plane hit a building in New York. This was at 8:45 a.m. Most will remember this time for the rest of their lives as it changed the face of how we all live in this world.
My first reaction was that it was purely an accident. I was shocked and surprised, but tried to go about my day. Later that night there was a hospitality networking event that had been cancelled in downtown Washington, D.C. My boss called me to discuss the "fam trip" that had been scheduled to occur the following week. At this time, we did not know the reasons behind the incident and wanted life and business to go on as usual. Things changed at that moment for everyone.
As we walked today, my son told me about a kid that had a "pocket knife" in his Sunday school and how he used it to open his yogurt container. When I was 8, my dad got me a pocket knife for my birthday. Today, as a result of what happened on that day, I was compelled to tell my wife about my son's experience and we know we need to have a conversation with the teacher. The world has changed.
The inconvenience that we now may have when we travel pales in comparison to the losses that occurred with thousands of families.
This morning we talked about how airlines used to serve hot meals on planes with real silverware. My son never experienced this, and he doesn't know anything different. He is used to long security lines and eating airplane meals with plastic forks.
As we go about our lives seven years later, we may try not to remember all that happened on that day, but I think we all know it's important that we never forget.
If it will help you or someone else, please express your thoughts about this day.
