Lyndall De Marco is the executive director of the International Tourism Partnership (ITP) founded 15 years ago by HRH The Prince of Wales. It is the tourism program of the charity organization International Business Leadership Forum (IBLF). Since its inception, ITP has provided leadership to hotel and tourism companies on environmental issues and, at the same time, provided a non-competitive platform for the sharing of ideas and the implementation of strategies that will benefit the industry
Under De Marco’s leadership the ITP has developed an array of practical tools and initiatives, including Sustainable Hotel Siting, Design and Construction guiding principles; a Sustainable performance operations tool, the going green initiative; as well as cutting edge community investment strategies and programs. Many programs, such as the environmental benchmarking tool and environment management for hotels, have significantly advanced the industry awareness and treatment of environmental issues.
Formerly a corporate director with Pan Pacific Hotels and Resorts, De Marco was involved in the opening of 10 hotels and was herself for a time general manager of hotels in Bangladesh, Borneo and Malaysia. She founded the Youth Career Initiative in 1995. This unique program, taught in international standard hotels, has provided employability skills to disadvantaged youth in more than nine countries.
De Marco is constantly speaking publicly on the role of the hotel and tourism industry as a “force for good” and with 14 years experience in the industry is of the absolute belief that profitability and sustainability can walk hand in hand.

Success Stories In Tobago
May 15, 2008 | Link This | Email this | Comments (0)
I have just returned from the Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Conference in Port of Spain, where there were over 500 participants and FOUR green sessions. This is a region that absolutely must focus on sustainability and I was so delighted with the response to such issues.
On this occasion I had a chance to listen to real success stories such as the Bucuti Beach Resort named in National Geographic Traveller’s first annual “Stay List.” Owner and CEO Ewald Biemans clearly demonstrates that sustainability and profitability work hand in hand.
There were so many wonderful examples not only of operations but of renovations and, of course, new developments. I wish I could have bundled all of these “green disciples” into a travelling show to really demonstrate that it is easy being green.

Support From Owners

I was recently the keynote speaker at the Hosts Hotels and Resorts Excellence awards. The entire meeting was focused on green issues and the contribution that a hotel can make to the community. Too often we hear that the “ownership does not support (green issues), which is the reason we have not done it.” It was so heartening to see an ownership company so committed--from design to operations--and providing the resources so their hotels could achieve results. It was particularly interesting to see so many brands working side by side on these issues. In matters of the environment and contribution to society we all need to work together.
Too often the issue of “green” is being used as a marketing tool and, although this is the ultimate goal, companies have to be sure they pass the “green-wash test.”

Sustainable & Profitable

The tourism industry and hotels have a greater stake in the preservation of our environment than many other industries and that is why I am pleased to be able to contribute in a small way with my soon-to-be regular comments and suggestions.
Presently I am the executive director of the International Tourism Partnership (ITP), which was founded by HRH The Prince of Wales in 1992. The aim is to inspire global leaders in the travel and tourism industry on a non-competitive platform to share knowledge and resources, develop policy and actively implement programs and initiatives that have a positive impact on environmental, social and economic issues. Our 19 members comprise leading hotel brands. Prior to this I was a corporate director with Pan Pacific Hotels and Resorts, where I was charged with the change from a traditional hotel company to that of a values-based cultu...Read More
