#TBT: Decades of advertising, similar strategies

This Sheraton Hotels and Motor Inns advertisement’s goal in the May 1969 issue of Service World International was simple: Attract international travelers to the brand’s US hotels. SWI was one of the original industry vehicles that had global reach and could help Sheraton reach a global audience — even if it was more of a professional journal.

The ad, with its telex and telephone reservation numbers, as well as a promise to pay commission promptly, continued the following year with a similar style and message, as seen below in the May 1970 issue:

While the ad campaign is from nearly 50 years ago, the forward-thinking brand strategy is similar to Sheraton 2020 launched last June by Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide. The five-year, 10-point aggressive marketing initiative aims to put the brand back in the spotlight through a variety of innovative, inspiring and passion-igniting projects.
