Kempinski deals in Georgia: Kempinski Hotels has signed a management agreement with M2 at Mtatsminda LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of JSC M2 Real Estate, for a luxury hotel development in Tbilisi, Georgia. The property, consisting of at least 95 rooms and suites, is set to open in Q3 2020.

Whitbread implored to sell assets: Elliott Advisors has become increasingly frustrated with Whitbread Plc’s strategy of owning Premier Inn hotels outright and wants the company to offload chunks of its US$7.64 billion property portfolio, the Sunday Telegraph reported. The activist investor believes Whitbread’s strategy is “depressing” the company’s share price and is leaving it open to a cut-price hostile takeover. The shareholder is also keen for Whitbread to bolster its board with directors having hotel industry experience.

Hotel Equities growth: Atlanta-based Hotel Equities has been selected as the strategic partner for Kelowna, B.C.-based Braemar Group to operate six hotels located in British Columbia, Saskatchewan and Alberta. The hotel portfolio consists of four premier Choice branded hotels and one Best Western Plus currently open and operating, as well as a TownePlace Suites by Marriott hotel expected to open in Q3 2019. The hotel portfolio has a combined total guestroom count of 596, with development projects in the pipeline.

Marriott out in Deira: Marriott International will suspend operations at the JW Marriott Dubai in Deira starting May 12 due to “circumstances” beyond the control of the hospitality group and that have interfered with its ability to continue to operate the hotel, the company said in a statement.

Hyatt in Malaysia: Hyatt Hotels Corp. has entered into a management agreement with a wholly owned subsidiary of Hap Seng Consolidated Berhad group to develop a Hyatt Centric hotel in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. Expected to open in 2021, Hyatt Centric Kota Kinabalu will be the first Hyatt Centric hotel in Malaysia.

Barcelo to Turkey: Spain’s Barcelo Hotel Group reportedly plans to invest €100 million in Turkey over the next five years to reach a total of 20 hotels. The group officially inaugurated its 5-star Barcelo Hotel Istanbul on May 3 and has invested €60 million in the county to date. Barcelo Group will particularly focus on Istanbul, Antalya on the Mediterranean coast, Izmir on the Aegean coast, the capital Ankara and Cappadocia, according to the company executive.

Hotusa comes to Chicago: Grupo Hotusa, Barcelona, has added the former Dana Hotel & Spa in Chicago to its Eurostars Hotel Co. group, the 200th hotel in the portfolio. The 216-room hotel has been renamed the 4* Eurostars Magnificent Mile.
