Briefs: Wynn’s 2Q results | New Coppola hotel gets go-ahead

Wynn’s second quarter: Wynn Resorts has reported its second quarter 2020 financial results. Operating revenue was US$85.7 million, a decrease of 94.8%, or US$1.57 billion, from US$1.66 billion for the second quarter of 2019. Net loss was US$637.6 million, compared with net income of US$94.6 million, or US$0.88 per diluted share, in the second quarter of 2019.

New Coppola hotel wins approval: The San Francisco Planning Commission unanimously approved Francis Ford Coppola’s plan to convert five floors of a landmark tower into boutique hotel rooms for his Hideaways Collection brand. The film director has owned the property since 1972. Plans call for converting 5,743 square feet of existing office space across five floors into 15 hotel rooms. The existing second-floor Café Zoetrope will be reduced in size to accommodate a hotel lobby but will remain open for business.

Dakota Mountain Lodge acquires Waldorf Astoria Park City: The Park City-based Dakota Mountain Lodge Homeowners Association has acquired the 159-room Waldorf Astoria Park City in Park City, Utah. The luxury resort by Hilton has newly renovated rooms and suites, as well as a restaurant, Powder, the Waldorf Astoria Spa and outdoor space with fire pits, a heated pool and hot tubs.

Margaritaville Resort Palm Springs: Margaritaville Resorts will open the Margaritaville Resort Palm Springs this fall, following a renovation and conversion of the existing property, Riviera Palm Springs. The Palm Springs, California-based resort will have 398 rooms, multiple Margaritaville-inspired dining options with indoor and outdoor seating, a St. Somewhere Spa, and over 40,000 square feet of combined wedding, meeting, and event space. 

Who acquired Thomas Cook’s shares in Westfort: Swiss LMEY Investments AG has completed the acquisition of a 50% stake in Westfort Capital Ltd., a hotel investment company focused on the Mediterranean sun and beach resort market, from Thomas Cook Group Tour Operations (in liquidation), resulting in 100% ownership by LMEY of the hotel investment platform.

SLS Hotel restaurants to close permanently: The fates of two popular Beverly Hills, California restaurants within the SLS Beverly Hills hotel are in jeopardy. Representatives for the Bazaar and Somni at the hotel said that those restaurants will be forced to close permanently Friday after a lawsuit filed by the luxury hotel’s owners sought to terminate a consulting agreement. The suit claims the hotel’s operators had failed to address structural, cost-cutting measures and propagated detrimental and negative statements about owners to staff.

Cambria launches podcast: Cambria Hotels has launched its first podcast series, “Travel Inspired with Cambria Hotels.” It is hosted by Cambria brand management director Rick Hertan and Choice Hotels SVP, upscale brands, Janis Cannon. The podcast explores the topics travelers value most while on the road and the ways in which Cambria hotels are designed to cater to those priorities.

Marshall managing five: Salisbury, Maryland-based Marshall Hotels & Resorts has taken over management of five hotels. The properties include the 100-room Holiday Inn NW Houston Beltway 8 in Texas, the 96-suite SpringHill Suites Winchester in Virginia, the 74-room Hampton Inn Adel in Georgia, and the 114-room Hilton Garden Inn Riverhead and the 131-suite Residence Inn Long Island East End, both in New York.

Lark adds Tradewinds: Massachusetts-based Lark Hotels has added the Tradewinds Carmel to its collection of management properties. The 28-room hotel in Carmel-by-the Sea, California, has views of the Pacific.

Red Roof’s ‘Room in Your Heart’: Red Roof and its franchisees have pledged to donate US$25,000 to the Thurgood Marshall College Fund to support graduating seniors from historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) through Red Roof’s “Room in Your Heart” program. A percentage of all bookings made for stays from August 1 through December 31 using code VP627809 will be donated to the fund.
