CitizenM CEO’s tactics to survive, thrive

COVID-19 hasn’t slowed down CitizenM CEO Klaas van Lookeren Campagne. Instead, it has shifted his focus. “Let’s go come out with a better product, not less. Let’s give guests more,” he told his staff in March.

The result so far? In the latest interview in our HotelsLife series, the 20-property company has another 21 properties under active development. In May, the brand opened its fourth hotel in the U.S. (two more will open this autumn in Washington, D.C., and Geneva, Switzerland). In July, CitizenM signed a deal with Germany’s largest hotel developer to search for locations in Munich, Hamburg, Frankfurt and Berlin. And the company recently announced a new hotel adjacent to Facebook Inc.’s headquarters in Menlo, California.

CitizenM plans to double its footprint in five years, and it’s looking for prime locations in cities with the highest barriers to entry. Read how Campagne is managing those ambitious goals amid a pandemic.
