Can hotels create convergence economies?
A new report from Horwath HTL Canada highlights how hotel owners, developers, franchisers and hotel companies can reimagine operations by placing local community development at the core of what they do. The COVID-19 pandemic has acted as a reminder, the report states, that engaging with the local community is essential to business continuity. Hotel design, development, operations, services and amenities putting communities front and center will make the global and the local converge, the report adds.

The impact of the coronavirus pandemic has left Portuguese soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo’s chain of hotels facing an uncertain future. In partnership with Dionisio Pestana, the head of the Pestana Hotel Group, Ronaldo currently owns two hotels: one in Funchal, his hometown on the island of Madeira, and another in the Portuguese capital, Lisbon. However, the Hotel Pestana CR7 Funchal, the first of the establishments to be opened, has now been closed for several months, amid an 80% drop in tourism on Madeira as a result of the pandemic.
What Americans miss the most
According to a new study from Hilton, 95% of Americans are missing travel right now. Some 188 million Americans surveyed already feel a “travel memory deficit,” leading to greater stress and the feeling of lost or missed-out-on special moments with loved ones. Some 54% said travel memories are more important than their favorite piece of jewelry, and another 53% say those memories are more important than their smartphone.
