COVID-19: Live events go virtual | Serviced apartments prove resilient

Live events trending virtual

A new survey found that nearly three-quarters of planners are moving their face-to-face events to virtual or hybrid in 2021. The survey, by Global DMC Partners, a network of independently owned destination management companies and event experts, focused on the widespread impact of the COVID-19 pandemic across the meetings and events industry. Key highlights of the findings include:

  • Over 90% surveyed reported that some or all of their 2020 events have been postponed to 2021
  • Nearly three-quarters of planners are moving their face-to-face events to virtual or hybrid in 2021. While most respondents predict that their face-to-face events will resume in the first half of 2021, many plan to include a virtual option with their live event, indicating that 2021 will be a hybrid year
  • 82% believe a vaccine is the most important factor in bringing back face-to-face

Serviced apartment operators prove more resilient

Trading across Europe’s serviced apartments has proved more resilient during the pandemic than other parts of hospitality despite an obvious decline in performance, according to a new report from HVS. A survey of leading operators, investors and lenders conducted for the annual report reveals that the majority of operators have seen top-line performance decline by 25% to 50% this year, compared with 2019, while a third of operators report declines of up to 75%.

These figures suggest those operations are still largely profitable, albeit with reduced margins, with operators benefitting from the fact that serviced apartments are self-contained with their own kitchens and amenities, making it easier for guests to social distance.

Atlantis Paradise Island reopens with safety measures

The Bahamas’ Atlantis Paradise Island will resume operations on December 10. To ensure the safety of their guests and resort team, visitors will be opting-in to vacation in place throughout the duration of their stay. Upon reopening, Atlantis will have new experiences for families, small groups and couples, such as private sunset speedboat tours and dive-in movie nights. To help reassure travelers, the hotel has implemented its “Atlantis Clean & Safe Promise,” which meets international and local standards for health and safety protocols.
