HOTELS top 5 for December: Shifts in luxury, leadership

Happy new year! Before we move forward too far into 2021, let’s take a quick look back at HOTELS top stories for the month of December. As usual, they provide a glimpse into what was top of mind for readers. That includes the number one story, an essay by Thailand-based hotelier Anthony Lark, about what the pandemic can teach us – and should teach us – about how luxury travelers have changed, or perhaps wanted all along, from the hospitality sector.

The second and third spots mark another chapter in the turbulent story of Kempinski Hotels: the departure of Martin Smura as CEO after 18 months. Out the door with Smura, as well, went plans to develop the 7Pines brand.

The fourth and fifth stories focused on the scramble to develop new revenue streams in the midstream of a pandemic, including tapping the work- and learn-from-home crowds that need a change of scenery, and Mary Gostelow’s interview with Jeff David, president of Philadelphia’s Fitler Club, a membership club leveraging mutually beneficial local relationships.
