Briefs: Aiming for gender equality | Ritz-Carlton in the Swiss Alps

LeadingHôtelières aims for gender equality: A global team of hoteliers and hospitality academics have launched an initiative that aims to accelerate the path to improved gender equality in higher level positions across the industry, in line with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal 5. LeadingHôtelières is founded by CEO and president of the HoteliersGuild community, Frank Pfaller, and co-founded by Lindsey Ueberroth, CEO at Preferred Hotels & Resorts. The team has enlisted support from the likes of Grand Hotel Tremezzo owner and CEO Valentina de Santis, leading sustainability architect Yasmine Mahmoudieh, director of Red Carnation Hotels, Vicki Tollman, among others, who will all work to address gender balances at a systemic level, from research, to design, as well as networking.

Marriott brings Ritz-Carlton to the Swiss Alps: Marriott International has signed an agreement with Mario Julen to bring The Ritz-Carlton brand to Zermatt, debuting the first Ritz-Carlton ski resort in Europe. Expected to open in 2026, the 69-guest room property will be the second Ritz-Carlton hotel in Switzerland, joining The Ritz-Carlton Hotel de la Paix, Geneva. The Ritz-Carlton, Zermatt will be designed by Paris-based firm AW². Design plans include two restaurants and two bars, an outdoor terrace for alfresco dining, and a private dining room.

Deutsche in the Netherlands: Frankfurt-based Deutsche Hospitality will open a third IntercityHotel in the Netherlands in 2023. The new hotel, in Breda, follows in the footsteps of the IntercityHotel Enschede and the IntercityHotel Amsterdam Airport, the latter being scheduled to open in 2021. The IntercityHotel in Breda is a new-build that will have 174 guest rooms, a bar and flexible conferencing facilities. The hotel forms part of the “5Tracks” project, an initiative launched by the developer Synchroon in conjunction with the construction company J.P. van Eesteren.  

Remington managing N.Y. LaGuardia Airport Marriott: Remington Hotels, a Dallas, Texas-based third-party management company, has assumed management of the New York LaGuardia Airport Marriott in East Elmhurst, New York. The 443-room property recently underwent a US$30 million transformation led by SoHo-based luxury hospitality design firm Sawyer & Co.

Absolute’s fifth hotel in Chiang Mai: Bangkok-based Absolute Hotel Services Group will open its first white-label boutique hotel in Chiang Mai. The G  Hotel Chiang Mai is targeted to open later this year. The hotel will be the company’s fifth in Chiang Mai and will have 25 rooms plus facilities including a swimming pool and a restaurant.
