Corinthia gains presence in NYC with Surrey deal

Malta-based Corinthia Group added a crown jewel to its portfolio on Wednesday by gaining the management contract to run The Surrey in New York City, which was acquired last year by UK private investment firm Reuben Brothers.

The hotel, currently closed and going through extensive renovations led by the studio of Martin Brudnizki, is slated to reopen in early 2023. It will mark the first Corinthia-run property in the United States. It is also working with David and Simon Reuben to run a luxury hotel in Rome, according to a report in The Times of Malta.

Corinthia CEO Simon Naudi told HOTELS, “We have global ambitions and the USA means so much to us in this regard. So many of our guests in Europe come from America, which means we’re so proud to have this opportunity to bring our family inspired style of operations into New York.”

The Surrey, which was built in 1926, will have 97 guest rooms, including 33 suites, five signature suites and 12 luxury residences.

Casa Tua, known for its restaurant, hotel and private club on Miami Beach, with further locations in Aspen and Paris, will handle the hotel’s food and beverage offering.

“We trust the Corinthia brand, with whom we have also partnered with on another notable project in Rome, to deliver a current and innovative hotel proposition with an uplifting guest experience, while rejuvenating the properties to their former, historic grandeur,” said Reuben Brothers representative Jamie Reuben.

Naudi added, “We look forward to working closely with the Reuben Brothers to restore The Surrey to its former glory in time for its 100th anniversary.”
