What’s Hot: Milan landmark unveils renovation

Melding historical architecture and modern cool is a must for any designer working on one of today’s many high-profile renovation projects. It’s time to look past the obvious ways of marrying those disparate elements into a unified whole. In the case of projects like Excelsior Hotel Gallia, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Milan, Italy, it’s about both synthesizing those influences and celebrating the best of each.

The design team at Studio Marco Piva decided to celebrate the duality. The complete overhaul of the original historical building wasn’t enough — designers also added a newly built glass-and-steel wing. That approach carries through into the hotel’s interior.

References to Art Deco styling are offset with modern materials like aluminum. Five hundred pieces of curated art help finish off the statement.

The hotel also includes Italy’s first Shiseido Spa and a multifunctional space in the Cupola room. The property will debut bar and restaurant Terrazza Gallia in September.
