What’s Hot: Victorian resort unveils renovation

The iconic Hotel del Coronado off the coast of San Diego, California, has debuted a US$13 million renovation. Possibly best known for its appearance in “Some Like it Hot,”  the 757 guestrooms (including the original spaces, cottages and beach villas), the new look for this Coranado Island property required interior designer Gina Joyce of Joyce Design Group to meld the 1888-vintage resort’s look with the modern luxury required for the beach villas.

Joyce found the modern element she was looking for in a marine-derived palette. Blues, turquoise and beige create a calm, luxurious environment. The architecture provided the link to the original building. Joyce used traditional motifs for upholstery and timeless white built ins to marry the two sets of design influences.

Traditional motifs and modern tones define the space.

It’s the details here that help make that marriage a visually happy one. Elaborate pillows tie together the color scheme, while calling to mind the intricacies of Victorian style. Simple window treatments keep the space from feeling cluttered.
